A little guide to Hvar Town and FAQ

Fort Španjola (Spanish Fort) was constructed after a gunpowder explosion in 1579 destroyed the old fortress. Today, it offers a superb panoramic view of the town and its surroundings. The fort is just a 15-minute walk from here. We recommend wearing proper footwear, as some parts of the path are narrow and slippery. The best time to visit is at sunset. At the top, there's a café where you can enjoy a beverage or ice cream.

Napoleon Fort is another fortress located above Hvar town. It offers a 360-degree view of the island. You can reach it either on foot or by vehicle.

The Arsenal and Hvar Theatre: The Arsenal building faces the waterfront at the southwest corner of the Pjaca. The current structure dates from the reconstruction of a 13th-century warehouse, carried out between 1579 and 1611. Next to the Arsenal is the arched façade of the Fontik, a former communal storehouse for cereals and salt. In 1612, the Hvar Theatre was built on the first floor of the Arsenal, with entry from the Belvedere terrace above the Fontik.

The Cathedral of St. Stephen (Sv. Stjepan) and the Bishop’s Palace stand at the eastern end of the Pjaca. This was once the site of a medieval Benedictine monastery and an earlier church. It became a cathedral when the Bishopric of Hvar was relocated from Stari Grad in the 13th century.

On the northern side of the Pjaca, you’ll find several Renaissance buildings, such as the Paladini Palace and the unfinished Hektorović Palace (Gothic, 15th century).

The Loggia (Loža) is located at the western end of the Pjaca, overlooking the bay. Along with the Leroj Clock Tower, it is the only remaining part of the former Governor’s Palace. The clock tower is open to tourists and is a fascinating place to visit.

To the south of the town, on the cape, lies the Franciscan Monastery with the Church of Our Lady of Mercy, built in the late 15th century. Inside, you can admire a large and beautiful painting of The Last Supper. The monastery garden is also well worth exploring.

Hanibal Lucić’s Summer Residence (Ljetnikovac Hanibala Lucića) is located in the fields outside the town walls, to the east. Built in 1530, it is an excellent example of a Renaissance country estate, complete with an enclosed garden and outbuildings. It currently serves as a museum.

Finally, the town itself, with its charming old streets and historic houses, is a delight to explore.

Mlini Beach is my favorite beach. It is located on the Paklinski Islands, about 15 minutes by boat from Hvar Town.

Pokonji Dol Beach is approximately a 30-minute walk from Bonkan. It's a great spot if you enjoy walking.

Another beach area can be found by heading toward the town center and turning right. Along this stretch, you’ll find several beaches and beach bars, such as Hula Hula Beach and Falko Bar.

There are also beautiful beaches around the island of Hvar that can be reached by scooter or car. Notable ones include Mala Milna Beach, Dubovica Beach, and Zaraće Beach—all well worth a visit.

Breakfast at Hotel Park restaurant which is 2 minutes away from us and SOL on the main square.
For seafood, I recommend Junior and Macondo.
For pizza and pasta, La Bocca is a great choice.
If you're looking for traditional Dalmatian cuisine, try Menego.
Simple food Hvar Brewing Co. and Let's TACO 'bout Hvar

My top three overall favorite restaurants in Hvar are Dalmatino, Mediterraneo, and Val Marina. These last three are on the pricier side, but worth it—Mediterraneo is especially excellent for steaks.

You can also check the list on TripAdvisor, which is generally quite accurate. Please reserve the table.

Hvar is well known for its excellent wines, so if you're a wine lover, we highly recommend a wine tasting experience.

In Hvar Town, a great option is the wine tasting offered at restaurant Passarola. On the island, one of the best wine tasting experiences is at Tomić Winery in Jelsa.

You can contact them directly for more details and to make a reservation.

A great way to explore the beautiful island of Hvar is by renting a vehicle or a boat. You can choose from a variety of options, such as a convertible VW Beetle, scooter, quad bike, or electric bike. Rentals are available just behind the Cathedral, near the bus station. We don’t recommend any specific rental company, as most offer similar prices and services.

Boats can be rented either with a skipper or for you to drive yourself, depending on your experience and preference. All boat rentals can be found along the docks in the town center. Look for the wooden barrels on the waterfront—there, you can ask about the specific type of boat you’d like to rent.
Kayak can be rented in front of hotel Amfora.
Some beautiful spots to visit by boat include Red Rocks, the Paklinski Islands, and the island of Vis.
Alternatively, if you'd prefer not to rent, you can reach many of the Paklinski Islands by taxi boats, which depart from in front of the Arsenal building.
